Uchumi bounces back in East Africa

Kenya-Daily Nation reports that, Uchumi Supermarkets is back on an expansion drive, as it seeks to reclaim leadership position within the retail chain store category.

This move will meet growing consumer demands and increase jobs in Africa.

Uchumi hopes to almost double its branch network in Kenya and Uganda, with plans to open at least 17 branches across the region.

Earlier the chain had performed poorly and showed losses and was in debt. However, the current management turned around the company and was recently readmitted at the Nairobi Stock Exchange with increasing profits in 2010 and 2011.
